Congratulations! You’re now the proud owner of a beautifully upcycled Adhock candle. This bottle has been on a magical journey, transformed into a new life as a luxurious, hand-poured candle.

We’ve taken great care to preserve its original branding while filling it to the brim with premium vegan soy wax. Now, to help you enjoy your candle to the fullest, here are our top three expert tips, as we want you to get as much enjoyment out of your candle as we did creating it for you!

Here are our top 3 tips…

  1. Trim your Wick

Before lighting your candle, take a moment to trim the wick. This small, but important step, ensures a cleaner, longer burn by reducing excessive smoking and preventing black soot from forming on the bottle.

Keep your wick trimmed to approximately 5mm (1/4 inch), this helps maintain a steady flame and maximises burn time.

A simple pair of scissors or nail clippers can do the trick, but for precise and effortless trimming, we recommend using a wick trimmer, now available in our shop! We have a range of colour options, each with an angled design and precision blades, which make it easy to reach into deep candle jars, while the built-in catch tray keeps trimmings tidy.

If you accidentally trim the wick too short, don’t worry, just remove a bit of wax around it to expose more wick. For the best experience, make it a habit to trim before each use.

Want to dive deeper into the art of wick trimming? Snipping the wick is a practice we take very seriously here at Adhock Homeware, which is why we’ve created an article solely dedicated to the why, what, when and how of wick trimming. Check that out here

2. Safety First

Candles add warmth and ambiance to any space, but safety comes first! Whether your new candle is filling that empty corner, or you’re having to make space, it’s vital to make sure you have considered some key safety points to protect both your loved ones and your new product.

Here are some of our key safety tips at a glance . . .

  • Keep at least 1 meter of space above the flame to prevent smoke stains or overheating.
  • Position your candle away from flammable materials such as curtains, furniture, or books.
  • Never spray aerosols (hairspray, cleaning products) near an open flame.
  • Always extinguish candles before leaving the room or going to bed.
  • A little caution goes a long way in keeping your home cosy and safe!

Be sure to place your candle on an even, heat-resistant surface, away from the reach of children and pets, because no one wants an accident! It would be very wise to place your candle out of the reach of clumsy hands or wagging tails, (nothing worse than a big smash to ruin the zen!)

There’s no doubt that candles are a fantastic way to bring warmth into your home but burning open flames indoors should always be taken very seriously. You’d be surprised how much heat can travel, it is commonly advised to always leave at least 1 meter above a flame to avoid smoke stains or combustion.

Always position your candle away from any flammable household objects such as furniture, curtains, magazines, or clothes, and it goes without saying to remember never to spray aerosols such as hairspray or cleaning products near to a naked flame.

Finally, it’s good practice to extinguish your lit candles if you’re going to bed or leaving the house… always better to be safe than sorry! Who would want to waste such a great candle when you’re not there to enjoy it?

3. The First Burn

You’ve trimmed your wick and perfectly positioned your candle in a safe spot which means the moment has come… it’s time to light it up!

If you’re anywhere near as obsessed with candles as we are, you’ll understand the feeling of pure satisfaction when the wax almost gracefully melts to the very bottom of the vessel perfectly even.

To ensure an even burn and prevent tunnelling, let your candle burn for at least 3 hours on the first use. This allows the wax to melt evenly across the surface, setting the stage for future burns.

Why is this important? Soy wax has a “melt memory”, meaning if you don’t let it reach the edges of the container, it may start tunnelling, creating a deep hole in the center and reducing burn efficiency.

Our premium-grade soy wax is not only natural, vegan, and non-toxic but also burns up to 50% longer than paraffin alternatives. Some of our larger candles can last 100+ hours, filling your space with luxurious fragrance.

With some of our larger candles having an approximate burn time of 100 hours or more, you really can depend on Adhock to deliver that slow, long melt that fills your space with an unbeatable aroma… burn baby burn!

So, make your first burn count, perhaps during a relaxing evening or while unwinding with a book for a few hours of dedicated ‘you’ time.

Over to you!
